I wrote a blog some time ago about twitter tracking you using cookies, cookies allow twitter to track where you’ve been on the web and report your movements back to twitter so they can dish up targeted adverts.
Lets say for example you log into twitter at 9am and then spend the rest of the day shopping for a new laptop, twitter then uses that data to promote a tweet from Dell and charge the PC manufacturer for the click through or promoted tweet, simple stuff.
The difference between now and last year is that the setting has become ‘opt out’ meaning its on by default, here’s how to turn it off
Log in to Twitter and visit your account settings page.
Uncheck the box that says “Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits.”
Uncheck the box that says “Tailor ads based on information shared by ad partners.”
Scroll down and click “Save Changes.”
Personally I’m going to leave mine on, I’m not crazy on the idea my movements are being tracked but twitter need to make money in order to keep providing a great free service.
