We have spoken to some of the women at Everything Tech Group to see their thoughts on International Women’s Day.
Becky Herrington – Becky has been a customer account manager for almost 3 years at Everything Tech Group.
Nicola Austin – Nicola is a Customer Service Executive at Everything Tech Group.
Katie Taylor – Katie has been Marketing Executive at Everything Tech Group for 2 years.
What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a woman in business? How did you tackle them?
Nicola: The biggest challenge I have faced as a woman in business is juggling childcare and the family life/work balance. Also, the Fear of failure and owning your accomplishments. I tackled them by realising we all at some time in our life fail at something and that’s ok, it also helps to switch off at the end of the day from work, for a better work-life balance and that it is not boasting if you achieve something good at work, it’s an achievement!
How have things changed for women in business since you first started your career?
Becky: When I first started working, the leadership roles in the businesses I worked in were primarily men. The managing directors and CEOs of these businesses were male and then over the years, it has become an equal playing field. In turn, women have proven how fierce they can be, with some biggest players in business being female.
Katie: I think generally there are just more women in boardrooms than there were at the start of my career, and not just to fill a quota, they are there as they have genuinely proved their worth.
What still needs to change for women in business? How can this be achieved?
Becky: Things are already changing, and many businesses have recognised the need to become more flexible with working patterns and work-life balance, the typical 9-5 working day is becoming a thing of the past. Women usually have the job of mother, daughter, or carer to contend with, businesses understand that flexibility enables not just women but men as well that they can do both – have a career and have a family.
Katie: I think there is still a job to be done for women to be taken more seriously in the workplace, we need more women in top-level positions to inspire the younger generation.
If you could offer your younger self one piece of advice about being a female in business, what would it be?
Becky: If I could offer a piece of advice to my younger self I would say if you wanted something goes get it, you can do anything & be something. Don’t let insecurity & other people’s opinions change that – be you!
Nicola: The advice I would offer my younger self is to follow your dreams, every woman’s path is different, and you do not have to follow the traditional career path in life.
Katie: The advice I’d give my younger self would be to believe in yourself and to not limit yourself – if you believe it, you can achieve it, as cheesy as that sounds.
